The Study of Personal Space and Gender Differences 60903班 6090308李晓玉 6090313孙亚茹 6090319张红 6090329林敏 6090333杨一秀 Preface Personal space is an approximate area surrounding an individual in which other people should not physically violate in order for them to feel comfortable and secure. The amount of personal space required for any given person is subjective. The notion of personal space was introduced by HYPERLINK /wiki/Edward_T._HallEdward T. Hall, who created the concept of HYPERLINK /wiki/Proxemicsproxemics. In his book, The Hidden Dimension (1966), he describes the subjective dimensions that surround each person and the physical distances they try to keep from other people, according to subtle cultural rules. Sex differences have been reported in personal space,as well ,with women usually feeling more comfortable at closer distances than men .Still other research suggests that interpersonal distance is influenced by social relationships .Women prefer more distance between themselves and an opposite-sex stranger than men do .Experiment shows that when people asked pairs of friends and strangers to stand at various distances from each other ,both men and women felt more comfortable when an opposite-sex friend stood close than when a stranger of either sex stood at that distance .In general ,women tend to stand closer when talking with friends than do men .Understanding these sex differences can help us behave appropriately in social situations with both men and women . Content and Aim In our common life, we have such kind of feeling, when our individual domain is invaded, we will feel nervous, if opp side ignores the body language, ultimately, we will leave from this seat and find another place to sit in.
