Wu Yi, Vice Premier of the State Council 25 May 2006, Chengdu 各位来宾，女士们、先生们： Dear guests,Ladies and Gentlemen,上午好！很高兴来到四川成都，出席的七届中国西部国际博览会。我代表国务院向本届博览会的举办表示热烈祝贺，向到会的各位来宾和海内外朋友表示诚挚的欢迎！Good morning! It gives me great pleasure to come to Sichuan and to Chengdu to participate in the 7th Western China International Economy Trade Fair. On behalf of the State Council, I would like to congratulate on the opening of the Fair and to greet our guests and friends both home and abroad with a heartfelt welcome.中国西部地区是中华民族的发祥地之一，在五千年的历史长河中创造了璀璨的华夏文明。西部地区拥有我国一半以上的国土面积，蕴藏着丰富的矿产资源，具有巨大的市场空间，在能源、农业、旅游、科技等诸多方面，具有较大优势和发展潜力。进入新世纪，党中央、国务院从我国改革开放和社会主义现代化建设全局出发，作出了实施西部大开发的重大战略决策。六年来，在中央和国务院的正确领导下，经过西部地区各族人民的艰苦奋斗、开拓创新，西部大开发取得了重大进展和明显成效：基础设施和投资环境不断改善，经济增长速度普遍加快，生态建设和环境保护得到加强，教育科技卫生等社会事业稳步发展，人才开发取得实效。最为重要的是，西部地区的人民群众得到了实实在在的好处；全国其他地区也从西部地区的发展中受益。Western China is one of the cradles of the Chinese people, and has nurtured resplendent Chinese civilization over a history of 5000 years. Western China accounts for over half of the total land area of China, and is endowed with rich mineral resources, which can be translated into huge market opportunities, and enables the region with considerable advantages and great development potential in various areas including energy, agriculture, tourism, and science and technology. In the new century, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, in view of the overall situation of China’s reform and opening up and socialist modernization drive, have made a major strategic decision to develop Western China. Over the past 6 years, our efforts in developing Western China have fruited in major progress and noticeable results, which should be attributed to the correct leadership of
