Unit 2 Lies and Truth Introduction to the Text True or False English-Chinese Translation Chinese-English Translation The Darker Side of Christopher Columbus /biographies/2008/04/15/christopher-columbus-biography/ Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbuss arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 21, 1492, as an official holiday. The day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States and many countries in Latin America. What is truth? What makes a lie? Different people from different cultures and different periods of history have provided many answers to these two questions. Our views about lies can be roughly divided into two opposite ones. At one extreme is the position that lying is always bad and that we should try to find ways to avoid doing it. Toward the opposite extreme is the position that, although some lies are evil, many others are not. In fact they are necessary to hold our society together. Sometimes we lie in harmless ways, to protect each others feelings and to better our relationships. Lies can be classified in many ways. This passage introduces us to a fairly simple way to categorize them: little white lies, dirty lies, lies of omission, false promises, lies to oneself, etc. Just read the passage to get to know these different categories of lies. What is truth? — and the opposite question that goes with it: what makes a lie? Philosophers, teachers, and religious leaders from all cultures and all periods of history have offered many answers to these questions. Among Euro-North-American writers, there is general agreement on two points. The first is that what we call a lie must have been told intentionally — that is, if someone tells an untruth but they believe it to be true, we dont consider them a liar. The second point is that practically everyone lies, and lies frequently. But there the agreement ends. Paragraph 1 go with: normally accompany (sth.)
