Different people from different cultures and different periods of history have provided many answers to these two questions. Our views about lies can be roughly divided into two opposite ones. At one extreme is the position that lying is always bad and that we should try to find ways to avoid doing it. Toward the opposite extreme is the position that, although some lies are evil, many others are not. In fact they are necessary to hold our society together. Sometimes we lie in harmless ways, to protect each others feelings and to better our relationships. Lies can be classified in many ways.
