Mice with no treatment formed the controlgroup(groupI).Micetreatedwithlipopolysaccharide(LPS)and LPS+flunixinmeglumin(FM)formedgroupsIIandIII,respectively.All miceweresacrificedandtissuesampleswerecollected6hoursafter treatments. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GPX),catalase(CAT),aswellaslevelsofmalondialdehyde (MDA)andglutathione(GSH)weredeterminedspectrophotometrically. LPS caused a significant (p0.05) increase in levels of MDA (heart, kidney,spleen)whichisanacceptedbiomarkerofoxidativestress,and changed the levels of SOD, GPX, CAT and GSH. When FM was administered simultaneously with LPS, FM inhibited (p0.05) the increaseofMDAlevelsinalltissues.Asresults,LPScausedMDAlevels and oxidative stress to increase. However, FM depressed the LPS inducedincreaseofMDAlevels.ThisantioxidanteffectofFMmaybe beneficialinendotoxemia. Keywords:flunixinmeglumin,antioxidantstatus,endotoxemia. INTRODUCTION LPS,presentontheoutermembraneofgramnegativebacteria,isreleased duringbacteriallysisandcausesendotoxicshock.Endotoxicshockisthecause ofhighmortalityinintensivecarepatients(CadenasandCadenas,2002).Thereis convincingevidenceofsevereoxidativestressinsepsis.Oxidativestressoccurs whenantioxidantbalanceisdisruptedbyexcessiveproductionofreactiveoxygen species(ROS)suchassuperoxideradical,hydroxylradical,hydrogenperoxide, singlet oxygen (Cadenas and Cadenas, 2002; Mcdonald et al., 2003).
