In most public schools in the United States, sex education is a very controversial issue that school teachers, officials, and parents find hard to come to a compromise on. Sex education is very controversial because some parents do not want their children learning about sex, and some parents agree that their children should learn the different aspects that come along with sex education. Abstinence- only programs are programs that educate students on the benefits of abstaining from sexual intercourse. Abstinence-plus programs are programs that educate students on ways to protect themselves if they are already sexually active or if they choose to become sexually active from sexually transmitted diseases, advantages and disadvantages of birth control, and other contraceptives. When schools or health education teachers are faced with the decisions to incorporate abstinence-only and abstinence-plus comprehensive sex education programs, complications arise from the lack of common ground on the issue. Should sex education be taught in schools? Why or Why not?
Researchers agree that sex education is very important, but they have slightly different opinions concerning the following questions:
1. Should sex education be taught in school and what age should sex education begin?
2. What should sex education try to teach and what issues need to be addressed to
ensure that every student’s needs are being met?
Does sex education encourage students to engage in sexual activity or practice birth control?
