Spring – Darjeeling comes to Statfold (Saturday 31 March 2007)

Steam up At 8:45, we see all the steam locos being prepared for the day before PB No. 5 heads off light engine.
Light Engine Newly returned to working order and already a firm favourite with owner Graham Lee, PB No. 5 has a trip around the Field Railway that turns it to face chimney first for the first passenger train.
First Trains No. 5 takes out the first train and on the return trip the guard’s van is on the rear. This was achieved by running the loco around the loop but not the whole train. Jack Lane, No. 778, Trangkil No. 4 and PB No. 1 all haul trains but PB No. 1 had adhesion problems that weren’t solved until later in the year and it didn’t see much use.
Badger in the Dirt Unlike the SBR locos, Darjeeling No. 778 hauled its own dedicated stock and needed to be released on arrival back at the station before it could run round and work its next service. Badger was employed for this purpose on station pilot duties but derailed late morning on the dual-gauge points at the station exit.
Emergency Working No. 778 was trapped in the station but an emergency passenger service operated from the depot using the other locos. As the re-railing proceeded with jacks and blocks in place, clearances got too tight so the passenger service was suspended briefly while Badger was re-railed.
