* Chapter 5.Verbal reports 5.1 Introduction The content of this chapter Looking at another range of introspective techniques—Verbal reports 5.2 What do we mean by ‘verbal reports’ ? Verbal reports’ approach is some of an lndividual’s thought process. Eg: How do our students handle new vocabulary? Method is give students comprehension test on the passage or a vocabulary tests. Method is the taping of group discussion. Learner should introspect on their own individuals thouhght processes and make a verbal report on them. 5.3 Commentary The certain processes of verbal reports: First,think of yours learners.which aspects of their learning processess are ‘open’ to you ,and which aspects are ‘hidden’? Second,when you have done that ,see if ydents can think of ways in which your students’hidden processes could made open.then do the same for your own hidden teaching processes. Finally,ask yourself some questions. 5.4 Variable of verbal report Coming up with ways of making hidden processes more open to scrutiny. Various ways of catogorosing:self-report; self- observation; think-aloud. 5.5 Self -report A self–report is the process .Through interview,we go about teaching and learning. Self –report is the method of studying new vocabulary over a period of many years. 5.6 Self-observation Self-observation relates one particular instance or occasion. A self-report may be quite removed in time from some of the incidents being reported on. Self-osbservation can take place during the event itself. So ,we should get our students to make a self- observation on reading . You can do theses: Give the class a short text and allow them ,say,five minutes to read it silently; Asking them some questions ,and so on . 5.7 Think-aloud This is the most immediate of the there report techniques.
