Abstract
Objectives: A number of cross-sectional and prospective studies have now been published demonstrating inverse
relationshipsbetweendietqualityandthecommonmentaldisordersinadults.However,therearenoexistingprospective
studiesofthisassociationinadolescents,theonsetperiodofmostdisorders,limitinginferencesregardingpossiblecausal
relationships.
Methods:Inthisstudy,3040Australianadolescents,aged11–18yearsatbaseline,weremeasuredin2005–6and2007–8.
Informationondietandmentalhealthwascollectedbyself-reportandanthropometricdatabytrainedresearchers.
Results:Therewerecross-sectional,doseresponserelationshipsidentifiedbetweenmeasuresofbothhealthy(positive)and
unhealthy(inverse)dietsandscoresontheemotionalsubscaleofthePediatricQualityofLifeInventory(PedsQL),wherehigher
scoresmeanbettermentalhealth,beforeandafteradjustmentsforage,gender,socio-economicstatus,dietingbehaviours,
bodymassindexandphysicalactivity.HigherhealthydietscoresatbaselinealsopredictedhigherPedsQLscoresatfollow-up,
whilehigherunhealthydietscoresatbaselinepredictedlowerPedsQLscoresatfollow-up.Improvementsindietqualitywere
mirroredbyimprovementsinmentalhealthoverthef
