AutomatedTrackingofWhiskersinVideosofHeadFixed Rodents NathanG.Clack*,DanielH.O’Connor,DanielHuber,LeopoldoPetreanu,AndrewHires,SimonPeron, KarelSvoboda,EugeneW.Myers JaneliaFarmResearchCampus,HowardHughesMedicalInstitute,Ashburn,Virginia,UnitedStatesofAmerica Abstract Wehavedevelopedsoftwareforfullyautomatedtrackingofvibrissae(whiskers)inhigh-speedvideos(.500Hz)ofhead- fixed,behavingrodentstrimmedtoasinglerowofwhiskers.Performancewasassessedagainstamanuallycurateddataset consistingof1.32millionvideoframescomprising4.5millionwhiskertraces.Thecurrentimplementationdetectswhiskers witharecallof99.998%andidentifiesindividualwhiskerswith99.997%accuracy.Theaverageprocessingrateforthese images was 8Mpx/s/cpu (2.6GHz Intel Core2, 2GB RAM). This translates to 35 processed frames per second for a 640px6352pxvideoof4whiskers.Thespeedandaccuracyachievedenablesquantitativebehavioralstudieswherethe analysisofmillionsofvideoframesisrequired.Weusedthesoftwaretoanalyzetheevolvingwhiskingstrategiesasmice learnedawhisker-baseddetectiontaskoverthecourseof6days(8148trials,25millionframes)andmeasuretheforcesat thesensoryfolliclethatmostunderliehapticperception.
