Methodology/PrincipalFindings:WeusedtheHopfieldnetasthearchetypicalexampleofadynamicbiologicalnetwork. ByprogressivelyremovingthelinksoffullyconnectedHopfieldnets,wefoundthatadesignatedattractorofthenetscould stillbesupporteduntilonlyslightlymorethan1linkpernoderemained.Asthenumberoflinksapproachedthisminimum value,therateofconvergencetothisattractorfromanarbitrarystartingstateincreaseddramatically.Furthermore,with morethanabouttwicetheminimumoflinks,thenetbecameincreasinglyabletosupportasecondattractor. Conclusions/Significance: We speculate that homeostatic biological networks may have evolved to assume a degree of connectivitythatbalancesrobustnessandagilityagainstthedangersofbecomingtrappedinanabnormalattractor.
