Abstract
Coralreefsworld-widearethreatenedbyescalatinglocalandglobalimpacts,andsomeimpactedreefshaveshiftedfrom
coraldominancetoastatedominatedbymacroalgae.Therefore,thereisagrowingneedtounderstandtheprocessesthat
affectthecapacityoftheseecosystemstoreturntocoraldominancefollowingdisturbances,includingthosethatprevent
theestablishmentofpersistentstandsofmacroalgae.UnlikemanyreefsintheCaribbean,overthelastseveraldecades,
reefsaroundtheIndo-PacificislandofMoorea,FrenchPolynesiahaveconsistentlyreturnedtocoraldominancefollowing
major perturbations without shiftingtoamacroalgae-dominatedstate. Here, wepresentevidence ofarapid increasein
populationsofherbivorousfishesfollowingthemostrecentperturbation,andshowthatgrazingbytheseherbivoreshas
preventedtheestablishmentofmacroalgaefollowingnearcompletelossofcoralonoffshorereefs.Importantly,wefound
thepositiveresponseofherbivorousfishestoincreasedbenthicprimaryproductivityassociatedwithcorallosswasdriven
largelybyparrotfishesthatinitiallyrecruittostablenurseryhabitatwithinthelagoonsbeforemovingtooffshorereefslater
inlife.Theseresultsunderscoretheimportanceofconnectivitybetweenthelagoonandoffshorereefsforpreventingthe
establishmentofmacroalgaefollowingdisturbances,andindicatethatprotectingnearshorenurseryhabitatofherbivorous
