Abstract
Schizophrenic patients present abnormalities in a variety of eye movement tasks. Exploratory eye movement (EEM)
dysfunctionappearstobeparticularlyspecifictoschizophrenia.However,theunderlyingmechanismsofEEMdysfunction
inschizophreniaarenotclearlyunderstood.ToassessthepotentialneuroanatomicalsubstratesofEEM,werecordedEEM
performanceandconductedavoxel-basedmorphometricanalysisofgraymatterin33schizophrenicpatientsand29well
matchedhealthycontrols.Inschizophrenicpatients,decreasedresponsivesearchscore(RSS)andwidespreadgraymatter
density(GMD)reductionswereobserved.Moreover,theRSSwaspositivelycorrelatedwithGMDindistributedbrainregions
in schizophrenic patients. Furthermore, in schizophrenic patients, some brain regions with neuroanatomical deficits
overlapped with some ones associated with RSS. These brain regions constituted an occipito-tempro-frontal circuitry
involvedin visualinformationprocessingandeyemovement control,includingtheleftcalcarine cortex[Brodmannarea
(BA)17],theleftcuneus(BA18),theleftsuperioroccipitalcortex(BA18/19),theleftsuperiorfrontalgyrus(BA6),theleft
cerebellum,therightlingualcortex(BA17/18),therightmiddleoccipitalcortex(BA19),therightinferiortemporalcortex
(BA37),therightdorsolateralprefrontalcortex(BA46)andbilateralprecentralgyri(BA6)extendingtothefrontaleyefields
(FEF,BA8).Toourknowledge,wefirstlyreportedempiricalevidencethatgraymatterlossintheoccipito-tempro-frontal
neuroanatomicalcircuitryofvisualprocessingsystemwasassociatedwithEEMperfor
