PrevalenceandRiskFactorsofIntestinalParasitismin RuralandRemoteWestMalaysia RomanoNgui1,SaidonIshak2,ChowSekChuen3,RohelaMahmud1,YvonneA.L.Lim1* 1DepartmentofParasitology,FacultyofMedicine,UniversityofMalaya,KualaLumpur,Malaysia,2DepartmentofOrangAsliAffairs,GombakHospital,Gombak,Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia,3SchoolofScience,MonashUniversity,BandarSunway,SelangorDarulEhsan,Malaysia Abstract Background:Intestinalparasiticinfections(IPIs)haveaworldwidedistributionandhavebeenidentifiedasoneofthemost significantcausesofillnessesanddiseasesamongthedisadvantagedpopulation.InMalaysia,IPIsstillpersistinsomerural areas,andthisstudywasconductedtodeterminethecurrentepidemiologicalstatusandtoidentifyriskfactorsassociated withIPIsamongcommunitiesresidinginruralandremoteareasofWestMalaysia. Methods/Findings:Atotalof716participantsfrom8villageswereinvolved,comprisingthosefrom1to83yearsold,550 (76.8%)participantsaged#12yearsand166(23.2%)aged$13years,and304(42.5%)maleand412(57.5%)female.The overall prevalence of IPIs was high (73.2%). Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections (73.2%) were significantly more common compared to protozoa infections (21.4%) (p,0.001). The prevalence of IPIs showed an age dependency relationship,withsignificantlyhigherratesobservedamongthoseaged#12years.Multivariateanalysisdemonstratedthat participantsaged#12years(OR=2.23;95%CI=1.45–3.45),lowhouseholdincome(OR=4.93;95%CI=3.15–7.73),using untreatedwatersupply(OR=2.08;95%CI=1.36–3.21),andindiscriminatedefecation(OR=5.01;95%CI=3.30–7.62)were identifiedassignificantpredictorsofIPIsamongthesecommunities. Conclusion:Essentially,thesefindingshighlightedthatIPIsarehighlyprevalentamongthepoorruralcommunitiesinWest Malaysia.PovertyandlowsocioeconomicwithpoorenvironmentalsanitationwereindicatedasimportantpredictorsofIPIs.
