Methods/Design:TheprincipalclinicalquestionunderinvestigationistheeffectivenessofanonlineGAD intervention(E-couch)usingacommunity-basedsample.Weexaminewhethertheeffectoftheinterventioncan bemaximisedbyeitherhumansupport,intheformoftelephonecalls,orbyautomatedsupportthroughemails. TheprimaryoutcomewillbeareductioninsymptomsontheGAD-7intheactivearmsrelativetothenonactive interventionarms. Discussion:TheWebGADtrialwillbethefirsttoevaluatetheuseofaninternet-basedcognitivebehavioural therapy(CBT)programcontrastedwithacrediblecontrolconditionforthepreventionofGADandthefirstformal RCTevaluationofaweb-basedprogramforGADusingcommunityrecruitment.Ingeneral,internet-basedCBT programshavebeenshowntobeeffectiveforthetreatmentofotheranxietydisorderssuchasPostTraumatic StressDisorder,SocialPhobia,PanicDisorderandstressinclinicaltrials;howeverthereisnoevidencefortheuse ofinternetCBTinthepreventionofGAD.GiventhesevereshortageoftherapistsidentifiedinAustraliaand overseas,andthelowratesoftreatmentseekinginthosewithamentalillness,thesuccessfulimplementationof thisprotocolhasimportantpracticaloutcomes.Iffoundtobeeffective,WebGADwillprovidethoseexperiencing GADwithaneasilyaccessible,free,evidence-basedpreventiontoolwhichcanbepromotedanddisseminated immediately.
