(Q1-3 ) Since people are damaging the environment to develop the economy and improve their standard of living, should we stop the development of the economy or sacrifice the environment ?Today we’ll read a debate ---The economy or the environment, must we choose?. Step two: Reading strategy T: Have you ever read or participate in a debate? (Ss) Now how can we read a debate? Let’s look at Reading strategy on it.(P23) Q1: What’s the order of a debate? (Answer) 1. One side presents their points first 2. The other side follows (usually controvert the first opinion ) and presents their points (Speakers in a debate will represent opposite views.) 3. Have a discussion Q2: What are the basic elements in a debate? (Answer) Clear views; Persuasive language; Convincing evidence; Support your own idea only following a certain order for the speakers Step three: Fast reading Q1: What side does Mr Lin Shuiqing and Mr Qian Liwei each represent? (Answer: Mr Lin represents the society for Environment Preservation while Mr Qian， an economist.) Q2: What are their points? (Answer: Mr Lin : It is our duty to cut back on production and reduce the number of things we make and buy; Mr Qian : A healthy environment and development should br possible at the same time.)
