Get Ss to read a debate on the environment and economy
To participate in a discussion to find out ways to solve common problems between economy and environment.
Teaching procedures:
Step one : Lead in
T: Today we’ll come to a new topic about the environment. Q1.What are the environmental problems in your living surroundings?(Ss)Look at the pictures of welcome to the unit and discuss the questions below with the partner. (Q1-3 ) Since people are damaging the environment to develop the economy and improve their standard of living, should we stop the development of the economy or sacrifice the environment ?Today we’ll read a debate ---The economy or the environment, must we choose?.
Step two: Reading strategy
T: Have you ever read or participate in a debate? (Ss) Now how can we read a debate? Let’s look at Reading strategy on it.(P23)
Q1: What’s the order of a debate?
(Answer) 1. One side presents their points first 2. The other side follows (usually controvert the first opinion ) and presents their points (Speakers in a debate will represent opposite views.) 3. Have a discussion
Q2: What are the basic elements in a debate?
(Answer) Clear views; Persuasive language; Convincing evidence; Support your own idea only following a certain order for the speakers
Step three: Fast reading
Q1: What side does Mr Lin Shuiqing and Mr Qian Liwei each represent?
(Answer: Mr Lin represents the society for Environment Preservation while Mr Qian, an economist.)
Q2: What are their points?
(Answer: Mr Lin : It is our duty to cut back on production and reduce the number of things we make and buy; Mr Qian : A healthy environment and development should br possible at the same time.)
Step four: Detailed reading
Part1: 1.Read Mr Lin’s argument and answer the following questions;
Q1: What does Lin Shuiqing start his speech by talking about? What else does he think affect the environment?
