Abstract The present paper applies the discourse translation theory by Basil Hatim Ian Mason to analyze the English translation of social dialect in Fortress Besieged, with a view to exploring some possible treatments and measures in translating social dialect. This paper thoroughly discusses the social dialect translation in Fortress Besieged in three aspects prescribed by Basil Hatim Ian Mason: communicative transaction, pragmatic action and semiotic interaction, in order to judge the adequacy and appropriateness of the translation in achieving the equivalence in effect, intention and text
