Abstract: W e compared photosynthetic characteristics, p igm ent contents, chlorophyll fluorescences and anatom ical traits in leaves of seedlings betw een 7 liana and 5 tree species under wt o light irrid iances ( 4 and 35% of full sunlight) in a shadehouse in X ishuangbanna, SW Ch ina. The results show ed that: ( 1) In the low light, lianas had low er photosynthetic capacity, whilst they had the greater increasem ent ( lianas, 86. 4%; trees, 61. 5% ) in photosynthetic rates responded to the high light leve.l M oreover, lianas had h igher light compensation point (LCP ) and light saturated point (LSP ) than trees. ( 2) M axmi um efficiency of PS photochem istry (F /F ) was declined and nonphotochem ical quenching (NPQ) v m w as increased in them idday for both lianas and trees. Compared to trees under the sam e light leve,l lianas had h igher F /F values andw ere less photoinhib ited by them idday strong light.
