Origins of the Chinese Term “Xiàngliàng” Corresponding to the Phasor

ABSTRACT: The Phasor method is a simple and effective Edward Bennett
mathematical method in solving the linear circuits. The origins (American Institute of Electrical Engineers
of term “Xiàngliàng” were studied by means of collecting and AIEE)rotating vector
analyzing literatures, and visiting the concerned professors in vectorsinor
this paper. The English term “phasor” is derived from the phase.

It is recommended to the American Institute of Electrical
Engineers by Edward Bennett, Professor of the department of
1960
electrical engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison,
during the period of August 1941-March 1944. Before the term
phasor is suggested, such terms as the rotating vector, vector 1961 8
and sinor are used to represent the sinusoid quantities.
“Xiàngliàng” seems to be paraphrased from phasor and means
the quantity having phase. “Xiàngliàng” is possibly proposed
