Kevin Carter
He was a prominent South African
photojournalist.
In 1993, he started documenting the
rebel movement in Sudan.
He was the recipient of a Pulitzer
prize for his photograph depicting the
1993famine in Sudan.
He committed suicide at the age of
33.
✤ Carter’s picture sparked a wide reaction almost
overnight soon after he sent it to the New York Times .
Since the image was very engaging and it perfectly
illustrated the effects of the famine in Sudan, the photo
won the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography in 1993,
as well as the award for the American Magazine Picture
of the Year.
However, he came under heavy criticism for just photographing and
not helping the child. Some non-American journalists called his
photograph a “fluke”.
The man adjusting his lens to take just the right frame of her
suffering, might just as well be a predator, another vulture on the
scene.

Despite the widespread criticism, several journalists praised Carter. Bob
Steele, the director of the ethics program at the Poynter Institute for Media
Studies, explained the importance of photojournalists:
