* * Unit 4 Global warming Section Ⅰ Warming Up Reading 01课前自主预习 02课堂师生共研 * Questions: 1. Whats the glaciologists opinion of the lakes disappearance? 2. What does the corporation find? Does the scientists agree with that? 答案:1. They suggested the melting of nearby glaciers raised the lakes level to the point where the increased water pressure caused part of a glacier to give way. Water in the lake flowed out of the breach, into a nearby strip and then to the sea. So the lake disappeared eventually. 2. The corporation found out the earth tremor led to the disappearance of the lake. But the scientists blamed global warming for the disappearance of the lake. Large Lake Disappeared A lake in southern Chile has mysteriously① disappeared. The lake was situated in the Magallanes region in Patagonia and was fed by water, mostly from melting glaciers②. It had a surface area of between 4 and 5 hectares. “In March we visited the area and everything was normal. We went again in May and to our surprise we found the lake had completely disappeared,” said Juan Jose Romero, regional director of Chiles National Forestry Corporation. “The only things left were pieces of ice on the dry lake-bed and a big fissure③,”he said. The corporation is finding out the disappearance. One theory is that the area was hit by an earth tremor. It opened a fissure in the ground, which acted like a drain. Southern Chile has been shaken by thousands of small earth tremors this year. However, scientists blamed global warming for the disappearance of the lake. After flying over the lake, scientists said that they were able to draw preliminary⑤ conclusions that the climate change was the leading reason for the lakes disappearance⑥. They suggested that the melting of nearby glaciers raised the lakes level to the point where the increased water pressure caused part of a glacier to give way. Water in the lake flowed out of the breach, into a nearby strip and then to the sea, according to Andres Rivera,
