ABSTRACT :Based on the current archaeological data ，the earliest belt buckle appeared in China around eight century
B． C． (between the Western and Eastern Zhou dynasties)． Most of the buckles were made of bronze ，but a few were made of
gold ，silver ，and iron． The buckles were not only used to fasten garment but also for clothing ornamentation． The current stud-
ies on belt buckles set their attention mostly on buckle typology and style evolution ，topics on buckle origin and dissemination
are rarely mentioned． Based on the previous studies ，and the analysis of buckle typology and functions ，the author used archae-
ologically discovered Eastern Zhou buckles to study the origin of the buckle and its dissemination． The author also discussed the
relationship between the belt buckle and the belt hook．
