Pun and the Translation of English Puns AbstractEnglish paronomasia is normally referred to as pun, it is derived from the Latin language paronomasia. It is a very important figure of speech. It is a metaphorical device by using homophone and homograph wisely, and a regular form in English rhetoric widely used in various literary works, such as poems, novels, advertisements and riddles, etc.Its major characteristic is combining unrelated double meanings by using one word or a sentence in the form of word games, which would create two different levels of meanings.Based on the definitions and classifications of English pun, this paper points out how to construct puns with the help of homonyms, homophones, and homographs. English pun was divided into three types, they are homophonic puns,homographic puns, puns on both pronunciation and meaning.By taking advantage of its distinctive features in nature, English puns can achieve many effects: humour, satire,vivid expression of the characters feelings,which hugely increase the delicacy of language and improve readability in order to attract the readers interest.However,the translation of English pun is always considered to be extremely difficult.Some puns are even considered to be untranslatable.Since there are differences between Chinese and English in phonology and morphology,it is difficult to find equivalence both in sound and in meaning in the target language.But there is no source text that is absolutely untranslatable,the translation of puns is possible to a certain extent.This paper introduces 3 main methods to translate English puns.They are literal translation, free translation, and annotated translation.Keywords：English pun,Classification,Untranslatability and Translatability,Translating Methods??? 摘要英语Paronomasia通常被称作Pun,源自于拉丁语Paronomasia一词。英语双关语是一个非常重要的修辞手段，它是巧妙使用同音异义词或同形异义词的一种修辞手段，是被广泛运用于各种文学作品,如诗歌、小说、广告及谜语中的一种常见形式。它的主要特点在于通过文字游戏的方式用一个词或一句话巧妙的将互不关联的双重含义结合起来，并因此表达出不同的两层意思，本文在英语双关的定义和划分基础上指出了如何用同形同音异义词、同音异义词、同形
