Report of Research Trip to Western Hunan (湘西), March 2014 「近代宗教與族群關係之演變－以湘西地區的道教跟苗族之互動為討論中心」 （99-深耕計畫-13 ） Paul R. Katz (康豹) This was my eighth and final trip to Western Hunan in order to conduct research for my Academia Sinica Investigator Award (深耕計畫). During the week we spent there, my research assistant Kang Shih-yu 康詩瑀 were able to achieve the following goals: 1) Collecting new sources; 2) Doing fieldwork on local ritual specialists; 3) Staging the final conference for our project, during which the scholars and local experts who took part in our project presented detailed reports based on their documentary research and fieldwork. Shih-yu and I arrived in Changsha 長沙 on March 20, and proceeded to meet with our leading Chinese partner, Long Haiqing 龍海清. Long is a Miao 苗 scholar who has retired from the Hunan Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles (湖 南省文學藝術界聯合會) but still heads the review committee that evaluates applications for Hunan’s intangible cultural heritage (非物質文化遺產) projects. The three of us made plans for fieldwork and the workshop. Long was unable to accompany us into the field due to family issues, but he did attend the first day of the final conference. On March 21, the three of us and I took a long-distance bus to Jishou 吉首, the capital of the Western Hunan Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湘西土家族苗 族自治州). The next day, Shih-yu worked to finalize preparations for the conference, while also collecting new sources about the “jumping immortals ” (跳仙) uprisings of the early 1940s and “dancing incense” (跳香) rituals that are still held today. At the same time, Long and I did fieldwork in Fenghuang 鳳凰 County, with Long interviewing a Miao ritual specialist (巴代扎) 1
