Abstract : B sed on reoccurring motif in the mount inous re s of the West-bridges with high piers,
fibre element model of bridge of interest w s est blished, followed by det iled n lysis of free vibr tion
ch r cteristics.M nipul tion of the model en bles the investig tion of collisions of g p elements inserted be-
tween e ch set of dj cent exp nsion joints. El bor te comput tion, comp rison, nd m nipul tion of r w d t
were conducted using the non-line r time history n lysis methodology. Vi observing the pounding responses
to v rious seismic w ves s well s the imp cts of such collisions on the structure, it is evident th t the spec-
trum ch r cteristics of seismic w ves long with the n tur l frequency of the modeled structure re key f ctors
concerning its pounding responses. Furthermore, pounding could be benefici l to cert in discrete components of
the structure, to some extent .
