State Key Laboratory of Rail Traffic Control and Safety, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing 100044, China)  Abstract: Edge detection is one of the most fundamental topics in the research area of image processing and analysis.  First, several classical edge detection methods were introduced, and the performance of these methods was compared;  then, several edge detection methods developed in the latest yearswere reviewed; finally, the trend of the research of the  image edge detection in the future was discussed.
