Where does learning take place?
Most of us only know how to educate and instill, but not how to learn. - education expert Knowles
Most studies are conducted autonomously and outside formal training. For example, we can quickly browse information on the Internet, ask people experience in our daily work and so on, which are ignored by our training system.
The United States Department of Labor estimates that 70 or even more job related learning does not take place in formal training. Its really amazing. But I believe most of us have taken part in informal learning, so why are we surprised by such a statistical result? It may be that our business has invested considerable manpower and resources in formal training, but it turns out that our employees are learning informally. What led us to such a situation? The reason for this dislocation, I think, may be that no group or department has really taken over informal learning, and that there has been no informal learning in the budget for formal training.
Many businesses tell employees that you have to take responsibility for your own learning. Then, most of them do not help employees identify the learning needs of their employees and invest in the necessary learning resources. However, some companies are now aware of the value of informal learning, and both DDT and Deloitte (Accenture) have invested heavily in learning tools to support formal and informal learning. In essence, the two ways of learning are to improve work skills, and if you can establish formal training and informal learning combined with mixed training, it will produce huge benefits.
