In 1845,he built himself a small frame house on the shores of Walden Pond, and lived there for two years alone, a life of labor and study. No wife No friend No servants He supported himself by growing vegetables and by surveyingand doing odd jobs in the nearby village. He reduced his material needs by living simply, so that he would not have to spend much time supporting a lifestyle that he did not need or care about. In Waldens Where I Lived, What I Lived for ,he describes an motive : I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life!To put to rout all that was not life.
