§8-1 Introduction
The d’Alembert equation (second order differential equation):
A free wave equation
A simple solution (Sine and cosine function sin(ωt-kx), cos(ωt-
kx)) can be immediately derived from the d’Alembert equation.
Exact value c=299792458m/s
注：这个速度并不是一个测量值，而是一个定义。在1983年,光速取代了米被选作
定义标准(从1983年10月21 日起，米被定义为光在1/299,792,458秒内传播的距离)。
所以，无论你的光速测量技术精度有多高，都不影响c的数值，也就是说，你的光
速值永远是一个“假值”。通常，真实值永远不被知道，但是对光速，我们定义了
真实值。
Time-harmonic plane wave: Sine and cosine function sin(ωt-kx), cos(ωt-

Uniform plane wave: the field with the same direction, same
magnitude, and same phase in infinite planes (perpendicular to the
direction of propagation)
Wavefront: the surface of constant phase
Note:
①The uniform plane wave does not exist in practice. A very small
portion of the surface of a giant spherical wave can be identified
as a uniform plane wave.
②The uniform plane wave is a free electromagnetic wave. A
spherical wave can also be a free electromagnetic wave because it
also fulfills the above d’Alembert equation.
