Discussion Discussion Discussion Text organization Text organization Comprehending the text Read the passage quickly and answer the questions. Comprehending the text Appreciating paradox Work in pairs and explain the paradoxes in the sentences. Appreciating paradox 1 Britain’s modern urban landscape would not have surprised people in the 1940s. Although we think of urban landscapes as something fairly recent, in fact, urban growth and the development of suburbs as well began in the 19th century and developed even more in the early 20th century. So an urban landscape would not have surprised someone in the 1940s. 2 The Internet has “opened up” the world, yet 90 per cent of all web traffic is local. Appreciating paradox 3 There is nothing new about our love of the new. People in every age have liked new things, inventions, fashions, new ideas etc, so neophilia is not new or modern. 4 “May you live in interesting times” is a Chinese curse. People would think that interesting times are good times to live in, but this curse suggests that it is bad because chaos and anxiety follow the interesting times. Text evaluation Are the claims made by the writer of the passage exaggerated? Should technological progress always be an aim of society? Will we ever reach a point when no more technological innovation is possible? Is globalization a good thing? Why / Why not? Text evaluation Text evaluation Summarising Living in a world of ______________________________, There has never been anything quite like it. However, we are just __________________ deeper historical patterns, take ___________ for example, from historical context point of view, the world is almost ___________.
