Wetland soils, w hen submerg ed , become highly re- duced , but of en w i th a narrow oxidized surf ace zo ne. Transf orm ation s of ni trogen, phosphorus, manganese, and carbo n th at occur w i thin the anaerobic envi ronment all aff ect the av ailabilit y of minerals to the ecosystem. Som e al- so cau se toxic conditions. Most of the transfo rmation s are m ediated by microbial populations th at are adapted t o the cycli ng of m aterials in anaerobic environments. Chemicals are hydrologically t ranspo rted to w etlands through pre- cipitation , surface flow , g roundw at er, and tides.
