This study in Ecuador shows the increasing gap in language skills for children from 36 – 72 months based on socio-economic status. This graph shows that when the children in the study (all of whom come from the lowest 3 quintiles in the national wealth index) is broken into four wealth quartiles there is relatively little difference in TVIP scores at young ages and much larger differences as the children get older, with the poorer children having lower scores as they age and falling increasingly behind their peers in higher wealth brackets As a result, poorer children arrive in formal schooling at a significant disadvantage, and it makes it that much more difficult to break the cycle of poverty across generations Source: Schady N, Paxon C.
