Something you don’t know behind the private bookstores closures. imaginary in reality In the past ten years, over 50% private bookstores have been closed down. Private bookstores appeared in the 1980s, peaking in the 1990s. Afterwards, they started flourishing on a large scale but then lots of them have to go into bankruptcy. Tremendously affected by the changes of modern peoples reading habits and of knowledge production, 80% entity private bookstores will be bankrupt in next several years. Reasons: Violent impact of the online bookstores, rising rent of stores and the constraints from state-owned bookstores have exacerbated the difficulties in private bookstores survival. The first : While online bookstores, featuring abundant sorts, easy to purchase and large degree of discount, have huge advantages in attracting consumers. In addition to online bookstores, private bookstores also suffer from impact of e-books, which not appear directly in the form of physical book but provide readers with downloadable content. Although e-books cant become mainstream in a short term, they do have fatal influence on entity bookstores. The second: There are statistics showing that the rent of bookstores in the same size has risen at least threefold since 2003, but their profit has not been increasing correspondingly. The third: We can say that the impact from online bookstores and e-books is a kind of normal competition in market. However, for private bookstores, they can never compete with state-owned bookstores because of constraints from non-market factors including the advantages of state-owned bookstores in location, policies and so on. Today, an increasing number of entity bookstores have started to run business online. But in the long term, readers will become less willing to go into a traditional bookstore for wanting low prices.
