Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival There are many stories regarding its origin , the most popular and widely accepted version regards Qu Yuan, a minister during the Warring States Period (475 - 221 BC) . Unable to acquire the respect and dependence of the emperor, in his sorrow Qu Yuan threw himself into the Mi Low river. Because of their admiration for Qu Yuan, the local people living adjacent to the Mi Lo River rushed into their boats to search for him while throwing rice into the waters to appease the river dragons. Zongzi 食粽子 Dragon Boat race 赛龙舟 custom of Dragon Boat Festival Zong Zi ,the traditional food for the Dragon Boat Festival, is a glutinous rice ball, with a filling, wrapped in corn leaves. The fillings can be egg, beans, dates, fruits, sweet potato, walnuts, mushrooms, meat, or a combination of them. They are generally steamed. The main event of the festival is the Dragon Boat Race.These boats are long and thin with dragon heads on the bow of the ships.The boat races are said to represent the search for Qu’s body,with racing boats in a forward rowing motion,to the rhythm of beating drums. Dragon Boat Race People hang branches of moxa and calamus around the doors of their homes and display portraits of evils nemesis, Zhong Kui(在门上挂艾叶和菖蒲都是为了驱疾避凶,和悬钟馗像讨个吉利。) Many Chinese consider this time of year an especially dangerous time when extra efforts must be made to protect their family from illness. Families will hang various herbs, called worm -wood , on their door for protection. The drinking of realgar wine is thought to remove poisons from the body. Sachets are also worn.
