HOUSING STYLES
GABLE ROOF
A pitched roof cut into a triangular shape by the sloping sides of the roof
GAMBREL ROOF
A ridged roof with two slopes on either side, the lower slope having the steeper pitch
(French for horse’s hind leg)
MANSARD ROOF
A roof with two slopes, the lower almost vertical to allow extra roof space for the attic rooms
HIPPED ROOF
A roof with four sloped sides
PEDIMENT
A triangular gable across a portico, door or window; any similar triangular decorative piece over a doorway, fireplace, etc.
PILASTER
A shallow rectangular column projecting only slightly from a wall
HALF-TIMBERED
Having a timber framework with the spaces filled with masonry or plaster
CORNICE
A wide, molding with beveled edges that is used at the junction of an interior wall and ceiling or following under the slope (the angled sides) of a gable, pediment or roof
PORTICO
A roofed entrance porch supported on at least one side by columns
FANLIGHT
A window above a door, usually semicircular or semielliptical, with glazing bars radiating out like a fan
GINGERBREAD
Heavily, gaudily, and superfluously ornamented wood trim
TURRET
A small tower that is part of a building, usually round and from a corner
QUIONS
Dressed stones at the corners of buildings usually laid so their faces are alternately large and small
DORMERS
A window in a sloping roof, usually that of a sleeping-apartment, hence the nameA structure projecting from a sloping roof usually housing a vertical window that is placed in a small gable
SIDELIGHTS
A framed area of fixed glass alongside a door or window opening
BALUSTER / BALUSTRADE
A turned or rectangular upright supporting a railing or handrail, a series of such being called a balustrade
PALLADIAN WINDOW
A window with a central arched section flanked by two narrow rectangular sections
FRIEZE
Any sculptured or richly ornamented band in a building
