Each device works at a particular layer in the Networking model Page * Figure 16.2 Repeater Only Physical layer (1) data is considered (bits and bytes) A repeater is a Layer 1 device used for connecting network segments to form a larger ‘collision domain’ Page * A repeater connects segments of a LAN. It is a regenerator, not an amplifier. Notes: A repeater forwards every frame; it has no filtering capability (does not read frames). A repeater is a physical layer device Page * Figure 16.3 Function of a repeater Page * Figure 16.4 Hubs A hub is a ‘multiport repeater’ – a layer 1 (physical layer) device Page * A BRIDGE uses a table (called bridge table) for filtering decisions. It needs to populate this table with MAC addresses to enable it to make these filtering decisions. It is a data link layer (layer 2) device Note: Page * Figure 16.5 Bridge Port numbers 48-bit MAC addresses Frame for …..142 is dropped here Page * A bridge does not change the physical (MAC) addresses in a frame. A bridge has no MAC address of its own It reduces the chance of collisions by restricting frames to the segments they belong to. Note: Page * Figure 16.6 Learning bridge The rule is: ‘If you know that the destination is on your side, don’t pass the frame across – otherwise do’. flooding No flooding Page * Figure 16.7 Loop problem Multiple bridges can cause a
