What is the main idea of this novel? It describle a terrifying future world Fast reading 1. When was the book Brave New World written? 2. Who wrote the book? 3. How many types of clones are there in the world described in the book? What are they? Decide whether these statements true or false. 1. The novel is still a subject of much discussion today for it is possible that the future world would be like the one described in it. 2. The world described in the novel will become reality after six hundred years in the future. 3. Each Alpha person is identical but each Beta person is not. 4. In the world described in the novel, every single person is happy with its position in society. 5. The government also uses a drug to keep most of the people happy. 6. The writer of the novel thinks it good if people in a country are completely controlled by the government. Language points it became a subject of much discussion as soon as it first appeared. a subject of much discussion “议论/讨论的中心” 例:新的议案一通过, 就成了议论的中心。 e.g. As soon as the new bill was passed, it became a subject of much discussion. Guess the meaning: ①When we reached the top of the hill, the town appeared below us. ②He promised to be here at four but didnt appear until six. ④When will your new novel appear? 2)link-v. “显然;似乎;好像”,后接不定式、形容词或从句(常用it appears that—clause) Translation: 1. 她为何显得如此悲伤?(+ adj.) 2.他似乎有很多朋友。(+ to do) 3. 他看起来似乎很匆忙。(clause) ①Why does she appear so sad? ②He appears to have many friends. ③It appears that he is in a hurry. Brave New World takes place six hundred years in the future. take place vi.相当于 occur/happen 表示“发生、举行、举办”,一般指非偶然性事件的“发生”,即这种事件的发生一定有某种原因或事先的安排。 happen作“发生、碰巧”解,一般用于偶然或突发性事件 occur作“发生、想到、突然想起”解,其意义相当于happen 注:表示某事发生只能用sth.做主语 例:2008年中国发生了一场地震。 e.g: An earthquake occurred in China in 2008. 昨天发生了一起交通事故。 An accident happened yesterday. 西昌近几年发生了很大的变化。 Great changes has taken place in Xichang in recent years.
