Pinyin means “joining sounds together”. Pinyin is used to denote pronunciation of characters. It is also an efficient input method in Chinese computer software, supported by Microsoft Windows OS. Hanyu Pinyin is a system of using roman characters (alphabets) to form each syllable. Syllables are made up of Initials (consonants) + Finals ( vowels) + tone marks. There are two ways of showing tone marks that signify the pitch of a Chinese character. Example 2 (used in MS IME): tan1 滩 = beach tan2 谈 = converse tan3 坦 = frank tan4 探 = visit tan 贪 = greed Although hanyu pinyin utilizes an alphabet, its Roman lettering is not pronounced according to typical English conventions. One must learn the letters and their unique associated sounds in?pinyin?before using the system to notate the Chinese sounds.
