showsthatweshouldnotputtheeconomicfieldinlimitwhenanalyzingthedevelopmentofcitiesandthe
evolutionofspatialstructure.Weshouldattempttofindthenewfactorsthatinfluencethedevelopmentof
citiesandtheevolutionofspatialstructuretoexplainthisphenomenon.Thispaperregardstheinstitutionas
animportantfactorandputitintothetheoreticmodelaboutthechanginginstitutionandtheurban
development.Thenthethesisappliesthismodeltoanalyzetheinfluenceoftheinstitutionalchangefrom1949
to1998ontheurbandevelopmentandtheevolutionofspatialstructureaccordingtothemacro-aspectand
micro-aspect. Unlikethedevelopmentmodelofcitiesinwesternworldwhichispromotedbymarket
economythegrowthandstructuralevolutionofChinesecitiesarepromotedmainlybyinstitutionalchanges.
