Zhou Zhijia Abstract: Drawing upon the data collected between February and March 2008 in Xiamen City, this paper analyzes the motivations of Xiamen citizens who participated in the PX env ironmental protection movement. I t rev eals that participation can be categorized into three types informationrelated, appeal related and resistancerelated. That social motivation is the most salient factor affecting all types of participation.
