Camouflage and Mimicry I. Camouflage Have you ever wondered why animals have spots, stripes, or certain colors? Can you see the frog? Animals use their patterns and colors to blend into the environment. This is called camouflage. Hey! I’m a walking stick. I look just like the real stick next to me. Chameleon is one of the most famous creatures for camouflage since they can change colors to match their backgrounds. Animals that are camouflaged to their background have a much better chance to survive. The polar bear blends in nicely with its snowy background, so that it can hide while hunting. The octopus can change color instantly by expanding and shrinking the millions of pigment cells in its body to escape predators and hunt preys. This beetle is camouflaged to its background to hide from birds. The zebra’s white and black stripes help it hide from predators. “The black and white stripes don’t seem hidden to me. How can zebras hide from their predators? ” The answer is most predators of the zebra are black and white vision. They see things mostly in black and white. II. Mimicry Can you tell the Robber flies from the Bumblebees? They look alike in many ways, but the Bumblebees have stingers, the Robber flies do not. The Robber Flies also make a sound similar to a bee. If you were a predator, could you bee sure of the difference? How does mimicry help animals? Usually, if an animal can trick its enemy into thinking it is something less tasty or more dangerous, it will survive. ? What the Robber flies do is called Mimicry. It means one animal tries to look, sound, or act like another. The Viceroy is smaller in size and has a black line across its wings. It mimics the Monarch, which is poisonous and nasty to eat, so that the birds will leave it alone. Poisonous Not poisonous I’m the Monarch! I’m the Viceroy!
