* * * Gene ?ow and natural selection shape spatial patterns of genes in tree populations: implications for evolutionary processes and applications Victoria L. Sork Abstract A central question in evolutionary biology is how gene ?ow and natural selection shape geographic patterns of genotypic and phenotypic variation. First, through studies of contemporary pollen and seed movement, Sork has studied how limited gene movement creates ?ne-scale genetic structure, while long-distance gene ?ow promotes connectivity. Second, Sork research on spatial patterns of genetic variation has investigated the interacting impacts of geography and climate on gene ?ow and selection. Third, using next-generation genomic tools, she is now studying genetic variation on the landscape to ?nd initial evidence of climate-associated local adaptation and epigenetic variation to explore its role in plant response to the climate. Introduction Over the last twenty plus years, her research has focused on gene ?ow and geographical patterns of genetic variation at different temporal and spatial scales. 1.Gene ?ow and natural selection are two central. Usually opposing, evolutionary forces: gene ?ow distributes, homogenizes, and maintains genetic variation that can act as the ‘stuff of evolution’, while natural selection reduces genetic variation to the variants that favor survival and reproduction. 2.How the dynamics of gene movement create genetic structure? Analyze contemporary gene movement through pollen and seeds. Numerous studies have used paternity(亲本分析) analysis to assess the distance of pollen-mediated gene dispersal and the shape of the dispersal kernel. This research has generated empirical data and new methods to address key concepts through three lines of inquiry: 1 Contemporary gene ?ow at a landscape scale. 2 Geographic patterns of genetic variation. 3 Landscape genomics of adaptive genetic variation.
