They can understand words in reading or speak them in conversations, but cannot spell these words correctly in their writings. This has resulted in many spelling mistakes in their written practices and in some cases leads to failure in expressing ideas. The cause of the problem lies in teaching and testing. While emphasizing the development of listening and speaking skills, teachers tend to overlook the weakness of the students in spelling and in most tests, spelling ability of the students seems to be neglected. Under such circumstances students are given the wrong impression that spelling is not important and painstaking effort in its study is not worthwhile. From my perspective, proper measures must be taken to solve the problem. Teachers should put more stress on spelling and set clear spelling requirements in tests while students must develop a good attitude and make greater efforts in spelling learning.
