Text Structure “Swimming through fear” is a narrative that touches upon the author’s personal experience in how he mustered (鼓起) all his courage from his potential strength to fight the psychological fear of water in the face of the critical moment to save a drowning boy. The author intends to prompt the reader to understand how to conquer one’s physical or psychological fear that hides in the depth of one’s mind. Text Structure Part One (paras 1-3) It is the introduction of the whole piece of narration. Part Two (paras 4-17) It is the development of or the plot of the narrative, containing four sections to illustrate how the author summoned up his courage to fight his inner fear of water and saved the drowning boy. Text Structure Part Two contains 4 sections to illustrate how the author summoned up (鼓起) his courage to fight his inner fear of water and saved the drowning boy. 1st Section (paras 4-10) It is the rising action of the plot. 2nd Section (paras 11-12) It is the climax or the turning point of the plot. 3rd Section (paras 13-14) It is the falling action of the plot. 4th Section (paras 15-17) It is the resolution of the plot. Text Structure Part Three (paras 18-19) It is the conclusion of the narrative: He was relaxed and happy in a moment of triumph and salvation. Key Words (paras 1-3) 1. pull to a stop – stop moving (停下) E.g. They pull to stop where the group is gathered. (para 1) 2. waterproof (adj.) – 防水的;不透水的 E.g. I can wear my watch when I swim because it is waterproof. (para 1) 3. notorious (adj.) – 臭名昭著的;声名狼藉的 E.g. The bar has become notorious as a meeting place for drug dealers. (para 1) Key Words (paras 1-3) 4. sick to one’s stomach (adj.) – 想呕吐的 E.g. A pregnant woman may feel sick to her stomach all day long.
