I hold human sympathy on Oliver, who had traveled on foot, without a friend to help him or a roof to shelter his head .When Mr. Brownlow and Rose helped him escape from Monks’ maltreatment（虐待） and get the possession, he was grateful to them and seek ways to return their kindness. In the novel, what Oliver have done gives us deep impression. When Charley Bates and Sikes stole Mr. Brownlows things ,Oliver fell upon his knees at the Jew’s feet and beat his hands together in perfect desperation（绝望）.There is no denying that Oliver is a kind ,pious boy. Also, another character drew my attention. That is Nancy. As a child of the streets ,Nancy has been a thief and drank to excess .At last she sacrificed her own life in order to protect Oliver ,because she revealed Monks’ plots. So Nancy’s moral complexity is unique among the major characters . After I read the “Oliver Twist”, I am regretful to Oliver’s fate. Besides, I am sinking into a question, whether a bad environment can irrevocably (不可避免地) poison someone’s character and soul.
