Purpose By strengthening the international rules that must be the foundation of our shared future – and by ensuring governments abide by these rules – each of our nations will be more secure and more prosperous. --- Tom Donilon “ America is back in the Pacific and will uphold the rules” Economic boom from 1945 to 1970 In 1960, 55% of all household owned washing machines, 77% owned cars, 90% had TV sets, and nearly all had refrigerators. For the first time the majority of Americans enjoyed a comfortable standard of living. At the same time the nation was moving slowly to establish racial justices. John F. Kennedy Young and energetic, Kennedy promised to “get the country moving again” after presidency of Eisenhower in 1960. In 1961 Soviet launch of first manned spaceflight prompted Kennedys call for USA to be the first to land “man on the moon”. Such promise was fulfilled in 1969, when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The Cuban Missile Crisis ( naval blockade and withdrawal by Khrushchev) John F. Kennedy John F. Kennedy Civil Rights Movement Nonviolence movement to confront segregation(隔离)and discrimination(歧视). Lyndon B. Johnson Social programmes --The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Acts of 1965 --War on Poverty, including food stamps, preschool education for poor children, vocational training for dropouts from school, community service for slum youth, Medicare and Medicaid. Vietnam War(1950-1957) The Vietnam War was started under Eisenhower and was continued by Kennedy, Johnson and ended by Nixon. The war was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by USA. In April 1975, North Vietnam captured Saigon(西贡).
