John Steinbeck(1902-1968) 王安然 Life Experiences John Steinbeck was one of the significant Depression writers. He was born in Salinas, California in 1902. His father was a government official and his mother was a school teacher who shared Steinbeck’s passion of reading and writing. He lived in a small rural town and he often spent his summers working on nearby ranches. Life Experiences He went to Stanford University during 1919-1925, but he failed to graduate. He died of heart disease in New York in 1968. Life Experiences He had done many jobs such as a farm labor, a seaman, a news reporter, a bricklayer, a chemist’s assistant, a surveyor, and a migratory fruit-picker. His rich working experiences became the basis of his works. Those works helped him aware of the harsher aspects of the migrant life and the darker side of human nature. Notable Awards 1940 The Grapes of Wrath 《愤怒的葡萄》 ——Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 1962 The Winter of Our Discontent《烦恼的冬天》 ——Nobel Prize in Literature (realistic and imaginative writing, combining as it does sympathetic humor and keen social perception. ) His friend Ed Ricketts: an American marine biologist, ecologist, and philosopher. best known for Between Pacific Tides (1939), a pioneering study of intertidal ecology, and for his influence on writer John Steinbeck, which resulted in their collaboration on the Sea of Cortez. His friend In the 1930s and 1940s, Ed Ricketts strongly influenced Steinbecks writing. He frequently took small trips with Ricketts to give himself time off from his writing. Ricketts was Steinbecks model for the character of Doc in Cannery Row (1945) Writing style His best writing was produced out of outrage at the injustices of the societies, and by the admiration for the strong spirit of the poor. His theme was usually simple human virtue, such as kindness and fair treatment, which were far superior to the dehumanizing cruelty of exploiters. Writing style 1、Poetic prose 2、Re
