Although it played a transitional role, it still had its own place in the art history. Italian gardens were influenced by Mannerism at that time, and the content and form were accordingly changed. Among numerous magnificent Italian Renaissance gardens, this paper takes a sought- after architect named Vignola who was one of the most influential figures in Mannerist architectures and gardens as clue, and takes three villa gardens closely related to Vignola and with a lot of influence in the Italian Renaissance gardens as an example. Comparing these villas from the following aspects – site and function, overall structure, axis and proportion, and landscape elements details, to further explore art of Italian gardens in the Mannerist period.
