Mixtures An important idea in chemistry is that of a pure substance. In order to study the chemistry of substances, we first must obtain them in a satisfactory state of purity. You should realise that any piece of matter may consist of a single substance or a mixture of substances. All of the particles are identical. Each is an O2 molecule - a pair of oxygen atoms that are joined together. Since all of the atoms are identical, this substance is also an element. Pure substance: all of the particles are identical. A pure substance may be either an element or a compound. Compounds are formed
