1.1 This test is applicable to Diesel and Gasoline engines where a base level of transient calibration
is existing as required to run the test cycle.
1.2 To assess the durability of the engine to thermal expansion and contraction. Under specific
examination is the ability of the engine to function under conditions of high differential thermal
loads.
1.3 This test is especially defined to assess the ability of cylinder head, head gasket and cylinder
block to withstand thermal cycling.
1.4 During the test, the engine is cycled between rated power and low idle. The engine coolant is
also cycled from hot to cold respectively by an external rig. (For diesel engines rated output is
adjusted to 105% by adjusting the injected fuel quantity.)
1.5 During the rated speed phase of the cycle, the engine is supplied with hot coolant and is
maintained at 100° C. During the low idle phase, the engine is flushed with coolant at 30°C.
1.6 The cycle times should be just enough to ensure full temperature stabilisation (leading to metal
