Menu Menu Phil Gates graduated from Oxford University with a BA in Botany in 1973 . His subsequent research focussed on plant breeding methods applied to Vicia faba and rice . Other research included studies on desert trees in the Wahiba Sands of Oman. Phil Gates has applied his science communication skills to undergraduate teaching. In 2000 he was nominated by Durham University for a National Teaching Fellowship award and in 2001 received a Durham University Excellence in Learning and Teaching Award.
